There are a "limited" item that once the ability to get them disappears.
Also, if your keep getting an high dp on a mission it does not make you any better on that mission if you have to keep eating the canes (reducing the # in the world). You keep having to use them, there going to go away pretty quick.
I have some and will use them for that rare pccasion at the very end but dp is affecting.
(in game prespective)
There a winterfest gift from to the world from two of the demi-gods to adventures. How is that not "in spirit" of DP when rulers of the gw world find an amusing way for you to get special item on a special occasion (be it amusement or wanting to help mere mortals).

Ok... Here's my opinion. Hope no one has said what i'm about to say already...
How do we know that within a years time, anet won't have the same "special" items available for next christmas? I know i've stocked up on enough candy canes to last me a year. until next christmas, where most likely they'll just recycle this year's christmas event. Same thing with the halloween items.

Im all fine with Candy canes, as long as its in PvE, in PvP its totaly unfair. Korean teams use them nonstop to win, and when a playing field isnt fair, id say thats damn close to cheating.

I don't care if they keep candy canes or not, you know why? Because while playing PvE I could care less what other people think of me. Are you that vain that whenever you see someone use a candy cane you think to yourself "Yep that's right I'm better than that guy because I didn't have to use a candy cane", noone cares and it's vastly convient. Plus I would get used to the idea of the game changing because as Gray said in an interview with the Photics.com magazine, chapter is going to have a different mission system and many changes are going to take place, so in the next installement we may very well see more usable items becoming availible. Not to mention gimping yourself for the sake of being "skillful" is a slightly unskillful way of thinking in itself (yes I consider keeping your dp when you have the ability and the means to get rid of it, gimping yourself).

Candy canes give you an advantage. 'nuff said. If you don't like having an advantage in PvE, then there's something wrong with you.
And I've never heard of DP being referred to as skill. When did this happen? Did I miss the meeting, again?

God they are so usefull. ( Im one of those warroirs that needs constat supervision by a monk) But their should be a limit, you can only activate them once a week or somthing. That way people wont be able to spam them everyday while trying to do UW, FoW, or farming for caps in the ring of fire

Why on earth do you want them taken out?
Hypothetical scenario: Your group just suffered its second near-wipe in the underworld. You have been working on finishing all the underworld quests in one run for months, and this group looks to be the one, but you have had a few mishaps and dp is starting to stack high. Do you A) break out the candy cane, finish your goal, and retire for the day happy, or B) have the group wiped on the next mob because you think candy canes somehow make you less skillful if you use them.
There will be people who profit from the candy canes. There are people who profited from the trader reset as well. Candy canes are the one item in the game, the one item, that can help a good group rebound from a bad pull, or a surprise ambush. They can help you survive the PuG monks and finaly get thunderhead keep done. They do not unbalance PvP. They do not unbalance PvE, since no area requires candy canes to finish. Compare a 15>50 bow to an unmodded bow. You fight the same way in both cases, but in one case it is a bit easier. Same thing with the candy canes.

It doesn't matter, in the end good things never last. Eventually things will go back to the way they were whether people like it or not.

people are selling them for 500-1k..which is nuts..candy canes will never be considered a new system of pay such as ectos or gold..think about it..why stock up on them and try to make a new source of pay...one of these days Candy Canes will be all gone..than the one guy who spent so much to get his hands on 500+ will feel dumb having candy canes will take away dp..its not a refullable source..so why try to sell for high hoping it will be a new way to trade items..and yes i heard about 250 Candy canes traded for a razorstone...which is dumb..a weapon you can use forever..or Candy Canes with one time use...this didnt happen when we had Halloween items..cause not many people knew Abstinthe items can also take AWAY Dp..but to late to farm those..
but im not complaning made a easy 30 k selling 100 of em.

It goes to show that people will cry about just about anything and everything. Just about everyone has been in a tuff spot in the game at one time or another with High DP where something like candy canes comes in handy. Anet doesn't have to go the extra mile to please the players by giving them holiday events and the items they give out. So I'm sure that Anet thought about the effects that the candy canes may have on the game plus they have tons of stats/info to look at before making this choice.
So I don't agree with OP to take these out

Yeah, I'd like them to keep some collectors around to trade food items that remove DP, but that's like saying you need to get ITEMS before you can go out, that aren't weapons. It's like other games where you need potions, etc. This is based on skill, and keeping these will take away from Guild Wars.

Yeah well I'd like running and runners to be taken out of the game as well and I gave a very good suggestion idea how to do it. But, see, everyone doesn't play like you and me do, so, everyone doesn't have to follow what you want or I want. It's what ANET decides to do not you, not me. But, it's certainly your right to post your opinion about candy canes; though it will never happen. But, you of course can not use them and all will be fair and right when "you" individually play the game.
Me personally? I'm getting 1k each for my stock so I'm glad they stayed myself. Since runners are making a fortune doing little or nothing why shouldn't I? Use the game mechanics to my benefit. ANET doesn't seem to care too much about the PVE game, only about BOTS and I really don't know why since they don't care if people rush through the content, why should they care how much plat they have? Ebayers? Hah they will never stop ebayers or those other auction sites no matter how much they nerf the "rest of us". Drop rates are pathetic, but, ebay stock hasn't gone down an inch. If anything they practically want us to use ebay to get our gear looks like to me.

Ever done an Ascalon to Desert run, or run to Drok's? I see you posting a lot of hatred towards runners, and I'm curious to see if you've ever tried it. It's hardly "nothing", these runs take a bit of time and skill.

Hmm...sounds like dictatorship. Telling everyone to play the game your way and not letting them enjoying it in their own right.
I'm just saying...

Fiery I just tested out the absinthe and it doesn't take away death penalty, just made my screen extremely hazy and green. Anet must have taken the effect away from it when they added in Candy canes or something, oh well.
I don't think candy canes should be taken away since they're like a fossil fuel, you only get them after a year and they get used up very quickly. Also it's not hurting or affecting you in the slightest if other people use them, it's like saying I wish my next door neighbour would stop using vitamin supplements, it helps them but won't do a damn thing to help or hinder you.
I'd also LOVE to see a group take out 10,000 mobs of various types
